Circa 1966 Napa Valley, CA

Long before construction began, Rob & Lydia Mondavi, Jr. were researching flooring options for their new beach home in Beaufort, SC. Their number one criterion for flooring was that it must be reclaimed; it must come with a story. That was all her builder, Allen Patterson of Allen Patterson Residential, needed to know to direct them to us for her floor.  They were looking for a functional floor, full of life and character, which embodied their Napa Valley lifestyle and appreciation for sustainable living. Maintenance was crucial since this was to be a vacation house for family and friends and any time spent there too precious to be spent keeping the floors looking good; our oil finish was the perfect solution. Lydia fell in love with our Old Crow wood and custom oil finish; she worked closely with us to create their dream floor.

It was through this work that we became involved with the Mondavi Home Collection. The collection, inspired by Rob & Lydia’s Napa Valley lifestyle, is for those with a passion for wine, entertaining, and sustainable living. The collection features prefinished floors produced from reclaimed materials. "Beyond the beauty this will bring to the home, I am pleased with the fact that we are making a conscious decision to reclaim and repurpose this wood."  Rob and Lydia were both intimately involved with the creation of this flooring line; providing valuable input regarding both the species of wood selected and color.

Rob and Lydia had the first floor for the collection in mind before even approaching us about participating, the Reserve Barrel Collection. The floor is produced from Mondavi’s decommissioned wine casks personally selected by Rob. We carefully dismantle each cask, by hand, before milling it to flooring. "Winemaking families for generations have accented their homes with oak cask wood floors,” explains Rob regarding the inspiration for this design. “I'm constantly amazed at the beauty and depth of penetration that the wines impart into the actual wood. After years of aging the wines, the oak flooring holds a piece of wine making history that we have now captured to share with generations to come.”
